Energy Management for Shopping Centers in India

Dec 13, 2010

Background:
Past decade has seen unprecedented growth in the shopping centers in urban and peri-urban areas in India. This growth is coincident with the growing Indian economy and net disposable income of average in the urban and peri-urban centers. Most of the shopping centres are centrally air-conditioned; are above 500 kVA of connected load and will soon have to comply with the Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.  Energy use in the shopping complexes is dependent on the footfalls and varies drastically between weekdays; weekends and holidays. Energy use in leased/rented retail is as high as 60%; however, the shopping centre managers are responsible for 35 to 40% energy use in the Common Areas. As such, the shopping centre owners have direct interest and responsibility of providing the electrical services that are cost-effective. Also, with the growing costs of electricity in India and outages resulting from over 15% deficit in the peak power, it is an imperative for the shopping centre owners to reduce the electricity use. Most importantly, the now organized shopping centres & retail infrastructure industry is aware of the carbon impacts and any efforts that result in reducing the carbon footprint and electricity costs and associated reliability of electricity. The technical solutions leading to the energy reduction are well known; however, the service delivery is not easy.  Shopping Centers Association of India (SCAI) and the Customized Energy Solutions (Customized), along with other industry partners are pleased to invite participation of Chief Executives, decision-makers, facility managers and engineers from the industry to participate in a one-day seminar to deliberate on various points associated with the energy use; new trends and opportunities to reduce electricity use & cost and most importantly have a dialog with regulators and financing institutions to convert ideas into actions.
